Name it!
Letters and texts moved to Trier a while ago now. We feel very well taken care of in our new home. After getting everything to work and all, it was time to settle on a domain name – for good. We had difficulties deciding what to keep from the elements that matter to this edition. We toyed around with “letters”, “texts”, “around 1800”, “Berlin”, “intellectuals” in a series of combinations. Funnily enough, I noticed in retrospect that we didn’t envision at any point to have the word “edition” in the URL, and we still don’t have it in the title. Come to think of it, it might help to introduce something like “scholarly edition” in the title at some point….
Anyway, as we were discussing the domain name, we kept trying to envision the future of the edition and what it should and will be like and what readers will identify it with. In the end, it was the opposite movement that was decisive: not speculating on what might come, but looking back at what we have achieved. And so we took the advice to stick to our brand: I purchased the domain name berliner-intellektuelle.eu, which is now ours for at least five years. I am really looking forward to the URL being active – I will post it here in due time, hopefully with another novelty by then: metadata about the upcoming publications, presented together with the scans.
During this sorting and finding process, I was reminded of career discussions I had over the past year – you know, this discussion in which you are trying to sort things out and at some point, the senior researcher you are talking to suddenly asks you: “But what does your name stand for, scholarly-wise?”. The first time, you’re speechless. The second time, you mention your edition. The third time, you write your habilitation.
Speaking of which, the core of the writing process being almost over, you can count on reading me here more regularly. I promise to start this new era by updating the design and bringing the categories back on the menu after I’ve cleaned them.
